Only 40% now pass the computerised learners test
That is the RTMC's national figure. Its spokesperson, Simon Zwane, said in May 2026 that the learner's licence pass rate has fallen from 68% to 40%. It is a government body's number carried by news publishers, and we have not seen the data underneath it.
One province is lower again. Freedom Front Plus figures reported by MyBroadband in July 2026 put the Western Cape pass rate at about 17% across roughly 142 100 tests since the new system launched there in May 2025, against about 63% before. That is one province, the figure originates with a political party, and it reaches us through a news publisher. It is not a national statistic.
Here is the part that catches people out. It isn't one paper with one pass mark. It's three sections, each marked on its own, and you have to clear all three. Miss one section by a single question and the whole test is a fail, however well you did on the other two.
The section people spend the least time on is also the one with the least room to be wrong. Vehicle controls is only eight questions, and two wrong is your limit.
Then, when you fail, you're not told what you got wrong. The regulations say the examiner may give you your result and may not discuss the questions and answers with you. So you leave with three numbers, book again, study the same way, and fail the same section again.

How the K53 test is marked
Three sections, three pass marks, set in the Government Gazette. There is no total score and no overall percentage in the standard.

Say you get every rules question right and every signs question right. That's 56 out of 56, perfect. Then you drop three of the eight controls questions.

Some sites still say 68 questions and 30/30/8. That was the paper test.

Who PassPath K53 is for
PassPath prepares you for the Code 2 learner's licence, the licence for a normal car (a light motor vehicle). If that's what you're booking, you're in the right place.
If you're going for a motorbike (Code 1), this isn't for you yet. Your test asks about motorbike controls: the throttle, the clutch lever, the front and rear brakes. PassPath doesn't cover those. That's 8 of your 64 questions, and getting 3 of them wrong fails your whole test. We'd rather tell you now than take your money.
Code 3 (trucks and buses) isn't covered yet either. We're adding more codes; the car licence is what we've built and checked so far.
