Before you start
- Twenty multiple-choice questions in three sections: 9 on the rules of the road, 8 on road signs, 3 on the controls of the vehicle.
- The real test is 64 questions: 28, 28 and 8 [Government Notice R.93 of 2006, Government Gazette 28446, section 5.4]. This is a short sample of the same shape.
- There is no timer here. Testing centres report a 60-minute limit, but that figure is not in the regulation that sets the sections and the pass marks, so treat it as what centres report rather than as a rule we can point you at.
- Nothing is sent anywhere. The marking happens in your browser and we do not store your answers or ask for your email.
- You can change any answer before you submit.
- After you submit you get your score in each section, the correct answer for every question, and the source behind it.
How is the real K53 learners test marked?
In three separate sections, each with its own pass mark, and you must clear all three: 22 of 28 on the rules of the road, 23 of 28 on road signs, signals and markings, and 6 of 8 on the controls of the vehicle [Government Notice R.93 of 2006, Government Gazette 28446, section 5.4]. There is no total score and no overall percentage in the standard. That is why a learner can answer 61 of the 64 questions correctly, which is 95%, and still fail: 28 out of 28, 28 out of 28 and 5 out of 8 clears two sections and misses the third by one. How many people pass the computerised learners test?
About 40%. The RTMC's spokesperson, Simon Zwane, said in May 2026 that the national learner's licence pass rate has fallen from 68% to 40%. That is a government body's number carried by news publishers, and we have not seen the data underneath it. One province is lower again: Freedom Front Plus figures reported by MyBroadband in July 2026 put the Western Cape at about 17% across roughly 142 100 tests since that province launched the new system in May 2025, against about 63% before. That is one province, it originates with a political party and it reaches us through a news publisher, so it is not a national statistic and should never be read as one. How many questions are in the K53 learners test?
Sixty-four: 28 on the rules of the road, 28 on road signs, signals and markings, and 8 on the controls of the vehicle [Government Notice R.93 of 2006, Government Gazette 28446, section 5.4]. Some sites still say 68 questions and 30/30/8. That was the paper test. The full question breakdown has the detail.
Is this the same as the CLLT?
The computerised learner's licence test, the CLLT, is the same test delivered on a screen at the testing centre instead of on paper. The section sizes and the three pass marks are the ones in the gazette either way [Government Notice R.93 of 2006, Government Gazette 28446, section 5.4]. What changed is the delivery, and the rollout tracker records which centres have moved, province by province, with a source and a date on every entry. This page is practice for the questions, not a simulation of the centre's software.

No. PassPath covers Code 2, the licence for a normal car, a light motor vehicle. Motorbike (Code 1) and heavy vehicle (Code 3) are not covered yet. The vehicle controls section of a motorbike test asks about the throttle, the clutch lever and the front and rear brakes, and we do not teach those.
Testing centres report a 60-minute limit. That figure is not in the regulation that sets the section sizes and the pass marks, so we quote it as what centres report rather than as a rule we can point you at. No, and that is in the regulations. The examiner may give you your result and may not discuss the questions and answers with you [Government Notice R.93 of 2006, section 5.3]. You leave with three section numbers and nothing else, which is why practising in the same three sections is worth doing before the day.
No, and nobody selling "the real questions" has them either. These twenty are written by PassPath against the National Road Traffic Act and its regulations, the Department of Transport's road traffic signs manual and the gazetted K53 driving test standard, and each answer names the one it comes from.
